We have a range of exciting internship opportunities for you! You’ll have the chance to work alongside our experienced team in our Research and Development Centre.

What we do?

Dual Inventive works with our sister companies Core-Vision and Arcobel to develop and produce state-of-the-art wireless products enabling people to work more safely and efficiently in the rail sector, whilst maximising rail capacity, and improving reliability. 

We want to be ahead of our competitors, so we’re constantly looking for new technologies to improve the efficiency and safety of track workers through product advancements.

Working in the rail sector we are faced with lots of challenges. We want to be at the forefront of our competitors, by tackling these challenges head on providing customers with solutions to meet their needs.  

For example:  

  • How do we know which new technologies are available in the world?  
  • How can we prove them?  
  • And more importantly, how can we implement these technologies in the rail sector? 

As an intern, you will contribute to groundbreaking research that could potentially shape the future of rail. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your technical skills whilst gaining valuable insights into the technology side of the rail sector.   

Your assignment

You will join a professional Research and Development team, where you’ll be given an assignment to work on which will form part of a bigger challenge we face in the rail industry.  

Your contribution may involve Programming software in Golang, C++, Embedded C, Python and many more languages, experimenting with data simulation, working with machine learning or AI systems, soldering PCBs, using development kits to build your own POC, or testing devices in the field. 

Together, we will work with you to define the scope of the assignment ensuring that you are confident and excited about the task in hand, while aligning it with Dual Inventive’s overarching vision.  

What to expect

  • Your day will start with a stand-up meeting with both the team and your coach.  
  • You’ll participate in two-weekly sprints.  
  • Hybrid working options will be available 
  • Regularly, you and the team will present your ongoing work to the company’s product owners and stakeholders. 

 During your internship, you will have continuous support from an experienced team of developers and a coach who will guide you through the internship. 

What you will be working on?

We can’t reveal all the details upfront as we don’t want to give away our secrets and we want to keep an element of surprise. But we want to give you an insight into the assignments you may be working on.

Exploring new connectivity technologies
  • We are committed to developing innovative products; therefore, we are constantly exploring new technologies for our Internet of Things (IoT) safety products tailored to meet the needs of the rail sector. Building on the work previously completed by the interns we aim to further investigate the evolving connectivity standards such as LTE-M and 5G. This exploration will help us enhance reliability, coverage, and data transmission capabilities.  
Leveraging AI for enhanced railway works planning
  • To address customer needs, we are initiating a project to investigate the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into our systems. Our objective is to provide customers with the latest tools that will enable customers to streamline the planning process, ultimately increasing efficiency and productivity. 
AI data science research
  • This project aims to leverage AI and data science to analyse data collected from our IoT safety products. The main focus is on detecting anomalies and conducting correlation analysis to improve safety and efficiency in railway operations. By using these techniques, we will be able to provide end-to-end efficiency whilst improving rail safety.  
Enhancing energy management
  • Energy efficiency optimisation is a crucial aspect of our IoT railway safety products. This project focuses on PCBs to maximise battery performance, investigate new battery technologies, incorporate renewable energy sources, and improve software and hardware efficiency. Achieving this will help us to improve reliability and sustainability.
Exploring firmware emulators for extensive testing for IoT safety devices
  • We aim to ensure the reliability and functionality of our IoT safety devices, which is why we are keen to explore the use of firmware emulators for thorough testing. Accomplishing this will allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of firmware in enhancing the overall performance and safety of our devices.
Investigating safety critical RTOS and platforms for rail operations 
  • We aim to investigate safety critical real-time operating systems (RTOS) and platforms to improve safety in railway operations. This project will involve researching cutting-edge solutions such as SIL4 computer virtualisation and cloud-based systems that can potentially be incorporated into our infrastructure.
