We have a range of exciting internship opportunities for you! You’ll have the chance to work alongside our experienced team in our Research and Development Centre.

If you want to apply your learning to provide solutions to complex challenges, then we want to hear from you.

What we do

Dual Inventive works with our sister companies Core-Vision and Arcobel to develop and produce state-of-the-art wireless products enabling people to work more safely and efficiently in the rail sector, whilst maximising rail capacity, and improving reliability.

We want to be ahead of our competitors, so we’re constantly looking for new technologies to improve the efficiency and safety of track workers through product advancements.

What we expect from you

Your learning and knowledge is what we are looking for. You are more likely to be familiar with the latest technologies and innovations that will help take our products to the next level.

Working in the rail sector we are faced with lots of challenges. We want to be at the forefront of our competitors, by tackling these challenges head on providing customers with solutions to meet their needs.

For example:

  • How do we know which new technologies are available in the world?
  • How can we prove them?
  • And more importantly, how can we implement these technologies in the rail sector?

As an intern, you will contribute to ground breaking research that could potentially shape the future of rail. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your technical skills whilst gaining valuable insights into the technology side of the rail sector.

Your assignment

You will join a professional Research and Development team, where you’ll be given an assignment to work on which will form part of a bigger challenge we face in the rail industry.

Together, we will work with you to define the scope of the assignment ensuring that you are confident and excited about the task in hand, while aligning it with Dual Inventive’s overarching vision.

What to expect

  • Your day will start with a stand-up meeting with both the team and your coach.
  • You’ll participate in two-weekly sprints.
  • Hybrid working options will be available
  • Regularly, you and the team will present your ongoing work to the company’s product owners and stakeholders.

During your internship, you will have continuous support from an experienced team of developers and a coach who will guide you through the internship.

Assignments available

We can’t reveal all the details upfront as we don’t want to give away our secrets and we want to keep an element of surprise. But we want to give you an insight into the assignments you may be working on.

Electrical – Optimising Energy Efficiency in Internet of Things (IoT) safety devices

This project will focus on improving the energy management of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) utilised in IoT railway safety devices. The primary goal is to extend battery life, integrate renewable energy sources, and improve the efficiency of both hardware and software components.

You will analyse the energy consumption of current PCBs to identify and address inefficiencies and implement strategies to prolong battery life, to help improve performance while reducing maintenance needs.

You will also research advanced battery technologies to explore potential integration options that could further improve energy management.

Evaluating how Dual Inventive can incorporate renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, as well as tracking vibrations for supplementary power, will also be key. You will also investigate methods to improve efficiency through enhancements in both hardware and software directly on the PCB.

Addressing these areas will help optimise energy consumption and overall functionality.

By completing this assignment you will contribute to advancing the efficiency and sustainability of IoT railway safety devices, leading to longer lasting and more environmentally friendly solutions in railway safety.

UI/UX – Enhancing User Experience on MTinfo 3000 platform

In this assignment, you will examine the current user interaction data for MTinfo 3000, our web-based platform for managing railway safety devices. Using insights from tools such as Matomo and Sentry, your objective is to identify features that are not being fully utilised, recommend improvements to the user interface, and propose modifications to enhance the overall user experience.

This assignment will give you hands-on experience in data-driven UI/UX optimisation.

By completing this assignment, you’ll be able to provide insights and recommendations that will help create a more user-friendly and efficient MTinfo 3000 platform, improving the experience for users responsible for managing railway safety devices.

HW – Developing a Personal Warning (PWU) Prototype

In this project, you will create a prototype for a Personal Warning Unit (PWU) aimed to improve safety in railway environments. The PWU will provide real-time alerts through sound, light, and vibration, also displaying the quality of the 4G/5G signal.

Building on previous research, you will design and develop the hardware and firmware using Zephyr OS, integrate secure MQTT communication, and create a compact, 3D-printable housing.

On completion of this project, you will be able to demonstrate a fully functional PWU prototype, that includes the relevant hardware, secure communication capabilities, alert features and a custom-designed 3D printed housing to protect and display the unit functions.

AI – Data Analytics for Radar Sensor Behaviour and Anomaly Detection

In this assignment, you will examine the data from a newly developed radar sensor designed for detecting vehicles and determining their direction and speed.

You will expand on previous research for the ultrasonic sensor data to identify any anomalies, assess the accuracy of radar data and compare findings with the data obtained from the ultrasonic sensor data.

The findings and recommendations will help to refine the radar sensor by integrating any improvements in its Proof of Concept – working towards a more reliable and accurate vehicle detection solution.

AI – Exploring Reinforcement Learning for Embedded Systems

Embedded systems are increasingly improving their capabilities through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).  Although many AI applications rely on supervised learning with labelled datasets, there are some cases where datasets are unavailable. In these instances, reinforcement learning (RL) becomes a valuable alternative. RL enables an AI model to learn by assessing the results of its actions through rewards or penalties, rather than relying on pre-existing data.

This project aims to investigate how reinforcement learning can improve the functionality and intelligence of embedded systems. This will involve exploring the potential use cases of RL in embedded systems including the partial or complete of traditional control algorithms such as PID controllers and predictive software models.

By completing this assignment you will gain valuable experience in the field of AI and reinforcement learning, specifically within embedded systems. You will develop a deeper understanding of RL applications in practical embedded products, equipping you with hands-on knowledge that may prove advantageous for your future career. This project will give you the skills to develop your technical proficiency and prepare you to tackle challenges in the evolving field of AI and embedded system development.

If you’re interested, we have lots of innovative ideas ready to discuss with you, but we also want to hear your ideas.
